Uncertainty’s Knell

Mindless were the first:
Muddy-footed beasts
Ignorant of Gift given.
Fleeting memories
Sketched upon sheets of shorn wheat.

Thankless were the second:
Atlantis-venturing voyagers,
Pioneers of dispassionate cruelty,
Loveless lust,
Drowned in Narcissan delight.

Peerless were the third:
God-conquering giants,
Of mythology and magic.
And within their hearts
Dwelt not courage,
Nor longing,
But great stones, black as silence.
